Pan Endemic Series: Eduardo Luna & Fernando Lozano-De Aquí y De Allá

“In Mexico there is a common expression that relates to migration to the US: “Ni de aqui, ni de alla.” Not from here or there. As Mexicans who have built lives in the US we often face challenges on both sides of the border. Challenges of obtaining legal status in the US, navigating new social structures, and mastering English face us when we arrive here. Returning Mexicans often find themselves facing equally difficult challenges, told we don’t speak Spanish well enough, that we don’t have the correct ID or documents because we didn’t complete school there, or that we seem too “americanizados.” That common phrase looks at the negatives, what we lack as Mexicans who have lived in the US. This piece looks to change that narrative and instead focus on what we have gained by living a bicultural, bilingual, binational life. We can see the best and worst of both sides of the US-Mexico border and challenge both societies to be better. Mexicans and Mexican Americans can be both from here and there, equally Mexican and American, proud of both cultures and the pride of both countries.” Artist Bio: Eduardo Luna is a conceptual artist, cultural promoter, founder of Arte Mexicano en Indiana and a staff artist at Big Car Collaborative. Eduardo was born in Acapulco, Mexico, raised in the Midwest, and lives in the Near Westside of Indianapolis with his family. He has a B.A. in Media Arts & Science from IUPUI, frequently collaborates with Indianapolis’ lucha libre personalities El Camarón Electrónico and Melt-Face. Fernando Lozano Born in Mexico City, 1954, Fernando Lozano’s art transcends genre. His paintings, prose, and graphic designs are united through his choice device of layered messaging. Lozano’s work has been exhibited in Mexico City, Los Angele and Vincennes, Indiana. He currently resides in Vincennes, Indiana. The Pan Endemic series are individual artworks commissioned by Shauta Marsh, Co-founder and Director of Programming, at Big Car Collaborative. Due to the pandemic, Tube Factory artspace, our commissioning contemporary art museum has been closed to the public since March of 2020. This work and others to come are an effort to continue to support visual artists and share their work with the public.
